Mere Rasue, a 34-year-old artist from Ra, is embracing her God-given talent and using it to inspire others. Her journey, marked by challenges and growth, reflects her dedication to artistic exploration. Although her early life in Lautoka was influenced by her parents’ careers in government, Mere chose to marry young and start a family, which led her to question her future.
An encouraging nudge from her older brother prompted her to explore her artistic potential. He advised her to apply to a visual arts program at the University of the South Pacific, despite her initial unfamiliarity with the field. Her application was successful, and she was among the few chosen from a competitive pool of applicants.
As she delved into the world of art, Mere expanded her skills and knowledge, moving beyond basic pencil and ink to more diverse mediums such as acrylic paints and canvas. A significant moment in her artistic journey occurred when she met Anare Somumu, a notable artist, who helped connect her with the local art community.
Now actively involved with the Fiji Arts Council and exhibiting alongside renowned local artists, Mere finds joy in creating art inspired by her heritage and surroundings. She aims to use her work to educate younger generations about preserving cultural heritage and regrets not pursuing higher education herself. Nevertheless, she is committed to ensuring her daughters balance their academics with their artistic endeavors. Her oldest daughter has already expressed interest in pursuing art, following in her mother’s footsteps.
Mere remains hopeful about her future, aspiring to further her education in the arts and eventually become an illustrator for children’s books. Her story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the importance of following one’s passion.
This narrative not only highlights the journey of an emerging artist but also serves as an inspiration for many who may feel held back by life’s circumstances. It emphasizes the potential for personal growth and the impact one individual can have on future generations through the pursuit of their dreams and talents.
