From Struggles to Strokes: One Woman’s Artistic Awakening

Spread the love

Mere Rasue, a talented artist from Ra, has a profound belief that her artistic abilities are a gift from God, and what she creates is her way of giving back. At 34, her journey reflects resilience, growth, and a deep-seated love for art.

Raised in Lautoka by government-employee parents, Mere’s early life was shaped by their influence. She attended Jasper Williams High School but postponed higher education to marry young and start a family in Ba, where she had three children. The challenges of life led her to reflect on her future and aspirations.

Encouraged by her older brother, a lawyer, Mere took a bold step to apply for a visual arts program advertised by the University of the South Pacific, despite not knowing much about the field at the time. Her determination paid off, and she was selected for the program, becoming one of only three successful applicants out of thirty. This opportunity opened up a new world for her, introducing diverse mediums like acrylic paints and canvases that expanded her artistic horizons.

During an art exhibition at the Fiji Museum, she met renowned artist Anare Somumu, who became a mentor and guided her into the local art community, helping her gain valuable exposure. Mere registered with the Fiji Arts Council and showcased her works alongside other prominent artists, allowing her passion for art to flourish.

Through her art, which draws inspiration from her surroundings and cultural heritage, Mere aims to educate younger generations about the importance of preserving their cultural identities. She emphasizes the significance of education, reflecting on her own regrets about not pursuing it fully during her teenage years. She is committed to ensuring that her daughters achieve a balance between academics and artistic creativity, with her eldest already aspiring to be an artist like her.

Looking ahead, Mere plans to further her artistic journey and aspires to become an illustrator for children’s books, hoping to use her talent to inspire others. Her story serves as a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passions, illustrating how resilience and a willingness to learn can lead to fulfilling opportunities.

In summary, Mere Rasue’s journey from a young mother to an accomplished artist highlights the importance of creativity, education, and mentorship in realizing one’s potential. Her message is clear: embracing your talents not only enriches your life but can also inspire and educate future generations.
