From Struggles to Strokes: Discovering the Artist Within

Mere Rasue, a 34-year-old artist from Ra with roots in Somosomo Village, has faced numerous challenges on her journey to artistic discovery. Growing up in Lautoka, the daughter of civil servants—a magistrate and a school teacher—Mere’s early life was marked by the complexities of family and ambition.

Instead of pursuing higher education, Mere married young and started a family, which included three children. However, her circumstances led her to contemplate her future. Encouraged by her older brother, a lawyer, she took a significant step forward when he urged her to apply for a visual arts program at the University of the South Pacific, despite her unfamiliarity with the field.

This decision proved pivotal; Mere was selected for the program, standing out among 30 applicants. She was introduced to various artistic mediums, shifting her focus from just pencil and ink to exploring acrylics and canvas. Her exposure expanded further after she met Anare Somumu, a renowned artist, at an exhibition, who helped her connect with other artists and art groups.

Mere quickly immersed herself in the local art scene, exhibiting her work alongside established artists. Drawing inspiration from her environment, heritage, and the deeper connections to the land, her art aims to communicate the importance of cultural preservation to younger generations.

Mere is passionate about education, often reflecting on her desire for more academic opportunities. She encourages her daughters to pursue both their studies and artistic passions—her eldest daughter already shows promise as an artist, following in her mother’s footsteps.

As Mere looks to the future, she aims to continue growing in her artistic journey, with hopes of becoming an illustrator for children’s books. Her story is a testament to resilience, showcasing how embracing one’s talents can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.
