Sainimere Kurumaira, a 23-year-old recent graduate from the University of the South Pacific, embodies resilience and determination shaped by her challenging upbringing. Growing up in a family facing extreme poverty in Waikete, Tailevu, she learned valuable life lessons from her mother, who always emphasized the importance of tolerating hardships.
Kurumaira’s background has been marked by both joy and sorrow, especially after the loss of her brother 22 years ago. Despite these challenges, she maintained a positive outlook, driven by her mother’s encouraging words, which translated to “it is good to tolerate it a bit more.” This mindset propelled her towards academic and social success.
Reflecting on her childhood, Kurumaira described life as a “rollercoaster” due to financial struggles. Her father’s job as a salesman was not sufficient to support the family, and her mother worked as a housemaid to help make ends meet. Understanding her family’s hardships motivated Kurumaira to excel in school.
Her journey through higher education was not without difficulties. She encountered stress due to her academic workload and faced social pressures as she adjusted to university life. Financial difficulties, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, added to her challenges. However, her faith and moments of prayer provided her with strength, enabling her to navigate these trials successfully.
Kurumaira graduated on September 6, 2024, a day marked by a mix of joy and sadness as she remembered loved ones who could not celebrate with her. Supported by her father, sister, friends, and extended family, she cherishes this milestone as a testament to her perseverance.
Currently interning at Greenhouse Coworking, Kurumaira views this opportunity as a significant growth experience. Alongside her professional journey, she enjoys various hobbies, including streaming music and listening to podcasts, particularly those focused on true crime.
Looking forward, she aims to pursue a master’s degree in forensic psychology or forensic science within the next five years. Kurumaira encourages the younger generation not to give up, to stay focused on their goals, and to embrace new experiences with courage and determination.
