Vika Nakacia has overcome numerous challenges on her journey to establishing a rugby career, and her dedication has paid off with her selection for the Fiji women’s sevens team for the upcoming tournament in Dubai.
Beginning her athletic journey with rugby league in 2020, Nakacia transitioned to sevens rugby two years later and currently plays for the Ezers club, which was established last year. Prior to this, she competed with the Namoli West Tigers team in league, leading them to the semi-finals.
Emphasizing her resilience, Nakacia draws motivation from critics who question women’s involvement in sports. She has faced financial hurdles, often struggling to afford proper gear or even transportation to training sessions, forcing her to walk long distances to practice.
Despite her parents’ initial objections to her sport of choice, Nakacia began playing rugby during her Year 13 at the Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute in Lautoka, although she ultimately did not complete her education at that time. Now, with the opportunity presented by her recent selection, she is determined to revisit her education, aspiring to complete high school and pursue a degree in accounting.
Nakacia advocates for young girls to believe in themselves and pursue rugby if they are passionate about the sport, conveying a strong message that with faith and determination, anything is achievable. She also expressed admiration for Fiji men’s sevens player Jerry Tuwai, whose motivation has inspired her to remain focused on her goals.
This story underscores the importance of perseverance, and Nakacia serves as an inspiring example for young athletes facing similar struggles. Her journey encourages others to overcome societal challenges and pursue their dreams, illustrating the powerful role of sports in personal development and community empowerment.
