Delai Naiqasiqasi will see a new leader today as Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the newly appointed Tui Cakau, takes office following an inauguration ceremony at State House this morning. His political journey, which includes a notable tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, is often overshadowed by the challenges he faced earlier in life.

Ratu Naiqama, who grew up in humble surroundings, has always been driven by a strong determination to succeed. His journey from his childhood in the suburbs of Suva to living in Somosomo village, Taveuni, and eventually engaging in politics reflects a ‘stoic’ narrative recognized by those close to him. Raised by his mother, Adi Unaisi Lalabalavu, while his father served in the military during the turbulent period of fighting communist guerillas in Malaya, Ratu Naiqama’s early life was marked by resilience and dedication.

He received his education at Suva Methodist Primary School, Dudley Intermediate and Secondary School, and completed his secondary education at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School. After finishing school, Ratu Naiqama moved to a bachelor’s quarters in Draiba, which was designated for civil service cadets, where he began his career with the then Native Land Trust Board, eventually building a distinguished career in land and estate management.

A long-time friend, Savenaca Kamikamica, reflects on Ratu Naiqama’s destined path to greatness, highlighting his rapport with various communities across Fiji. His drive for academic excellence took him beyond Fiji, leading him to prestigious institutions, including a Master’s Degree in International Development from Clark University in Massachusetts, a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Rural or Regional Development Planning from Israel, and even a short stint at Harvard University.

Many view Ratu Naiqama as a natural leader; his ascension from Ratu Sukuna Memorial School to the presidency symbolizes his commitment to serving his people. Kamikamica notes his approach to leadership, not favoring any race or background, making him an ideal candidate for the presidency. His involvement in community matters, whether from a chiefly household or a small farmer, speaks to his inclusive nature.

Ratu Naiqama’s skills also extend to athletics, as he was recognized as a talented rugby player with potential to join the national team had he pursued that path. His multifaceted background and dedication position him as a figure of hope and progress for the nation.

In summary, as Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu officially takes on the role of Tui Cakau, his compelling life story of perseverance and leadership inspires both his supporters and the broader community, hinting at a promising future for Fiji under his guidance.
