Abdul Zorhab’s early financial hardships inspired him to establish a non-governmental organization aimed at aiding the poor and disadvantaged in the Western Division. His late grandmother, Sabra Khatoon, served as a significant source of motivation for him. Zorhab fondly recalls her lessons in generosity and compassion, stating, “She taught me the true meaning of generosity and compassion, even when we didn’t have much.”
In 2021, with the support of college friends and colleagues, he founded the One Nation Our People Youth Foundation. They began with small community initiatives, and as they shared their vision, their network of supporters grew. Zorhab described how seeing the positive impact of their work encouraged more people to join their cause, fostering a strong sense of community.
The foundation takes a unique approach by not only providing immediate support but also focusing on long-term solutions to uplift communities. They help individuals develop sustainable income sources, such as backyard gardening, while also addressing broader issues like climate change, homelessness, animal welfare, and youth mental health.
Despite the challenges he faced in establishing the NGO, including financial setbacks and personal sacrifices, Zorhab persevered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he prioritized supporting others in isolation at the expense of his own family time. He acknowledged the difficulties of juggling community service with his personal responsibilities but emphasized how these experiences fueled his dedication to helping those in need.
Looking ahead, Zorhab aims to continue his advocacy and community work while pursuing his education and possibly entering Parliament to have a broader platform for helping vulnerable populations.
He encourages young people to believe in their potential to create change, regardless of their current standing. “Surround yourself with people who share your passion, and together you can create real change,” he advises. “Remember, it’s OK to face setbacks; they’re part of the journey, but don’t let challenges stop you from using them as fuel to drive your dreams forward.”
This narrative of resilience, compassion, and commitment to community service offers hope and inspiration, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, one individual’s determination can lead to meaningful change for many.
