From Struggle to Success: A Journey Beyond Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges in overcoming depression, but his recent graduation from the University of the South Pacific marks a significant achievement in his journey. Mr. Tavatuilagi expressed that earning his degree was a long-cherished dream.

A decade ago, his aspiration of becoming a lawyer did not come to fruition. Nevertheless, he shifted his focus towards a career as a bank officer, ultimately achieving this goal. He emphasized the importance of cultivating a positive mindset as the foundation for his success.

“I surrounded myself with quality individuals and sought out a strong support network,” Mr. Tavatuilagi explained. He acknowledged that the dedication and encouragement from his family were vital components of his journey.

Determined to break free from the constraints of depression, he actively worked on changing his perspective to adopt a more positive outlook. Originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo in Tailevu, and with familial ties to Nasaqalau, Lakeba, Lau, the 33-year-old is committed to becoming the best version of himself whenever opportunities arise.

Mr. Tavatuilagi cited depression as one of the most significant battles he faced while pursuing his degree. “I owe my success to peers who believed in me and motivated me to persevere through my struggles and setbacks,” he shared. He also expressed gratitude for the role of faith and family in his life, stating, “God has been at the center of it all, and I am thankful for the gifts of family and friendship.”
