Boehm, believed to have originated from Weissenhorn, Bayern, Germany, reached Fiji on March 21, 1859, at the age of 32. Family narratives suggest that he was shipwrecked near Makogai and undertook an impressive swim of 18 miles to safety. Initially arriving in Ovalau, he later resided on Makogai before acquiring half of Kanacea Island, purchasing it in 1865 for a mere 40 pounds.
During the period between 1861 and 1865, Fiji benefitted from a booming cotton industry fueled by the American Civil War’s disruptions. Despite the chaos, many Europeans, including Boehm, sought to capitalize on this opportunity, with Boehm rising to prominence as the ‘cotton king of Kanacea.’ He was known for exporting cotton back to Europe, navigating the challenges brought on by the relocation of the local Kanacean population to Taveuni.
Boehm faced labor shortages on his cotton farm, prompting him to recruit laborers from other island nations.
