From Shadows to Success: A Graduate’s Triumph Over Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges due to depression, but he has now triumphed by graduating from the University of the South Pacific. Attaining his qualification has been a long-standing goal for him. A decade ago, Tavatuilagi aspired to be a lawyer, but when that path did not come to fruition, he shifted his focus towards a career as a bank officer and sought to become part of the USP alumni.

Now, he has successfully reached this goal. Tavatuilagi emphasizes that changing his mindset to perceive the positive aspects of every situation was crucial for him. He credits finding quality friendships and building a supportive network as essential components of his journey. “Having the right attitude and receiving strong support from my family was a vital part of my experience,” he explained.

Originally hailing from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, and with maternal ties to Nasaqalau in Lakeba, Lau, the 33-year-old has made a firm commitment to continually improve himself when the opportunity arises. He acknowledges that battling depression was one of the toughest challenges he faced while pursuing his degree.

Tavatuilagi expressed gratitude for his peers who believed in him and encouraged him to persevere through various struggles and setbacks. He remarked, “God was integral to my journey, and I am thankful for the gift of family and friendship.”
