Kitti-Talei Darlene Drodrolagi, a 27-year-old graduate of the University of the South Pacific (USP), exemplifies how a second chance at education can lead to a transformed life. She recently earned her Bachelor of Commerce degree, overcoming numerous obstacles along her academic journey.
Originally hailing from Lautoka, Kitti began her education at Drasa Avenue Primary, which she credits for fostering her interests. After primary school, she attended Tilak High School in Lautoka, where she encountered some distractions but managed to perform adequately. However, her Year 13 results fell short of her expectations, prompting her to find a way to achieve her goal of studying at USP.
To rectify her Year 13, Kitti spent an additional year at Fiji Agape Mission School. Instead of feeling defeated by the setback of repeating a grade, she used it as motivation to rise and pursue her dreams with renewed vigor. She began her degree program in 2019 through the Lautoka campus and persevered until she fulfilled her educational aspirations.
Kitti acknowledged the support of her mother, who has worked at USP for many years, allowing her to benefit from the institution. Despite her father residing in Papua New Guinea and being unable to be present, he provided unwavering encouragement from afar.
Throughout her academic journey, Kitti faced challenges, particularly adjusting to online learning and a new curriculum. Lacking the immediacy of in-person lectures and real-time interactions, she remained determined, overcoming obstacles to complete her coursework despite the difficulties of delayed communication.
Reflecting on her experiences, Kitti expressed gratitude for her accomplishments. Now ready to embark on her professional career, she is awaiting responses to several job applications and hopes to address the human resource needs of Fiji.
Kitti attributes her success to her faith, family support, and determination, sharing that there were moments when she felt like giving up. Her advice to current students is clear: even in tough times, perseverance is key.
