Transitioning from a background in science to the realms of accounting and economics posed significant challenges for 21-year-old Sanskar Kapadia. However, with unwavering determination and resilience, he, alongside Kamal Prasad and Fatima Siddeqa, was honored with the Most Outstanding Accounting and Finance Student (Department) Award for 2024 during a recognition ceremony at the University of Fiji School of Business and Economics in Lautoka last week.
Mr. Kapadia admitted that entering a new academic field was a daunting task. “It wasn’t easy to shift to a completely new field, and I struggled with concepts I was unfamiliar with,” he reflected. Nevertheless, the support from his lecturers and his commitment to hard work gradually helped him gain confidence. He recognized that balancing academic responsibilities with future career preparations was another significant challenge. “Managing deadlines, assignments, and preparing for the future wasn’t straightforward,” he explained. To overcome these hurdles, he became organized, prioritized his tasks, and even worked part-time after classes to maximize his productivity. These experiences instilled resilience and adaptability in him.
Kamal Prasad shared her journey of perseverance, highlighting her mother’s encouragement as a vital source of motivation. “The motivation comes from my mother, who always says that to achieve something, we must strive for it,” she stated. Prasad faced financial hardships, particularly regarding transportation costs, but she credited her father for his constant support and guidance. Through collaboration with her friend Ruqayyah Hakim, she was able to navigate her academic challenges head-on with determination.
Fatima Aiyesha Siddeqa, the top student from Nadi Muslim College’s 2021 cohort, emphasized the role of her mother and grandmother’s sacrifices in fueling her ambition. “I never wanted their efforts to go to waste,” she said passionately. For Siddeqa, success transcends personal accolades; it’s about creating a meaningful legacy. As the eldest daughter, she feels a strong responsibility to make her family proud. Her aunt, who she considers both an inspiration and a best friend, has been instrumental in her journey. “Success is seeing my aunt, grandparents, and mother smile with pride at my accomplishments,” she expressed.
This story is a testament to the power of perseverance and support systems in achieving academic excellence. Each student’s journey underscores that while challenges may arise, determination and the help of loved ones can lead to remarkable achievements. Their success not only serves as an inspiration for others in similar situations but also reinforces the importance of community and family in personal growth and achievement.
