Moreen Ram, a mother and rice farmer, has been honored with the title of Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) at the 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony organized by Fiji Rice Limited in Labasa. The 35-year-old was visibly emotional as she received her award from Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
In her remarks, Ms. Ram expressed her pride in this recognition and encouraged more women to consider rice farming as a feasible business opportunity. She lives in Muanidevo, Dreketi, and has dedicated the past seven years to growing her rice farming enterprise with strong support from her husband, who works as a civil servant.
Ms. Ram shared that her motivation to engage in agriculture stems from her family’s legacy in rice farming. She noted that the knowledge and passion for this field were inherited from her parents. As the new season approaches in November, she has set a goal to harvest seven tonnes of rice paddy. Previously, she faced challenges regarding drainage and access to harvesting equipment, but these issues have been addressed through cooperative arrangements with other farmers.
Describing rice farming as a lucrative venture, Ms. Ram highlighted a significant increase in rice prices last December, which rose from $850 to $1000 per tonne. This shift has encouraged farmers to stay invested in the industry. To enhance her farming operations further, she plans to apply for subsidies related to planting and weed control.
Ms. Ram encourages other women to consider rice farming, stating that while it may appear challenging, determination can lead to success. Her ultimate aspiration is to be recognized as the best farmer in Fiji, emphasizing that women can accomplish anything if they remain dedicated to their goals.
