From Prayer to Perfection: How One Student Led an Unforgettable Parade

Vilimoni Kevu, the head boy and parade commander of Levuka Public School, successfully led one of the finest cadet passing-out parades in Fiji, thanks to prayer and fasting over his responsibilities. The event took place at Nasau Park in Levuka, Ovalau last week, where the cadets displayed impressive choreography and precise timing, earning accolades as one of the best parades ever witnessed.

Hailing from Silana Village, Dawasamu in Tailevu, with familial ties to Navuloa Village, Bureta in Ovalau, Kevu set a strong example by showcasing discipline and effective leadership throughout the parade. The cadets, divided into four detachments, faced the challenge of mastering foot-drills in just two weeks, with many participating in a military parade for the first time.

Levuka Public School hosts this military parade every five years, coinciding with its anniversary celebrations, making it an entirely new experience for the cadets. Kevu reflected on the training, stating, “Having military instructors teach us the basics of the foot-drill was a significant challenge. It not only instilled discipline and obedience to commands but also taught us about maintaining conduct and behavior.”

The 18-year-old was honored with the baton of the honor award, an unexpected achievement for him. He expressed surprise, saying, “Like the other students, it was our first parade experience, so receiving the award was a delightful surprise.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork in overcoming the various challenges posed by military training.

Kevu gave thanks to God for guiding him through this opportunity, noting, “I am grateful for His guidance in overcoming training challenges. From learning commands to executing instructions, I’ve developed into a better leader because of it.” He recalled making numerous mistakes while learning the commands, and through prayer and fasting, he was able to perform flawlessly during the parade.

The chief guest at the event was Lieutenant Colonel Daunivakasala Kalitabua Ravunakana, the chief staff officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces International Defence Cooperation. He addressed the students about the importance of discipline and being responsible citizens. He highlighted that the cadet program transcends mere drills and uniforms, playing a critical role in developing students’ character and discipline amid a challenging global environment marked by shifting behaviors and declining respect for one another.

Lt. Col. Ravunakana remarked, “The marching exercises aren’t just about physical endurance; they also foster a sense of unity and teamwork.” He encouraged the LPS cadets to carry forward the discipline they learned, which cultivates values such as integrity, responsibility, and quality service—essential traits for any leader within their community.

This parade was a feature of the school’s 145th anniversary celebrations.
