From Police Officer to Community Leader: A Journey of Service

Joseph Fatiaki’s dedication to serving his community is deeply rooted in his extensive 35 years of experience as a police officer. At 63, he has been the chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services (DCOSS) since 2020, focusing on leveraging his background in law enforcement to support local initiatives.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Fatiaki noted, “Three years ago, I was elected chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services. My experience in community policing has greatly shaped my approach.” He explained that while his previous role involved authority and discipline, his current work is grounded in voluntary efforts, emphasizing that the role requires motivating community members to participate actively.

As a father of five and grandfather of eight, Mr. Fatiaki is passionate about engaging community members and believes that creating a supportive environment is essential for the success of organizations like DCOSS. “How you attract members to join is vital,” he stated. “Many lose faith without support from their leaders.”

He highlighted the importance of actively involving volunteers, acknowledging the unique challenges of leading a group of individuals who offer their time freely. His advice to young leaders aspiring to follow in his footsteps emphasizes the necessity of patience and commitment: “It’s quite challenging to be a leader, especially in this voluntary work. You must ensure that you provide truthful information to your members.”

Expressing gratitude for his ability to still contribute, Mr. Fatiaki said, “I feel that I’ve still got some energy to help the community I live in.” He plans to eventually step back to allow younger individuals to lead, underscoring a thoughtful transition and legacy of community service.
