Joseph Fatiaki, a dedicated community servant, has devoted over 35 years to a career in law enforcement. At the age of 63, he has been leading the Tavua District Council of Social Services since 2020, where he actively shares his extensive experience in community policing with members of the community.
Having been elected chairman three years ago, Mr. Fatiaki brings a wealth of knowledge from his police work to his current role. “It’s not new for me because I served in community policing during my time in the police force,” he explained. His transition from law enforcement to community service has been driven by his desire to assist others and encourage participation in community initiatives.
During his time in the police, Mr. Fatiaki learned the importance of discipline and following orders. However, he recognizes that his current position involves volunteers who are not obligated to serve, making it essential to foster a spirit of enthusiasm and cooperation. “The only thing we try to do is to encourage community members to join,” he stated.
He emphasizes the critical nature of attracting members to community organizations, noting that many volunteers may become disheartened without support from their leaders. He insists that leaders must engage their members meaningfully and inspire them to participate actively in community service.
Mr. Fatiaki advises youth aspiring to leadership roles to practice patience and commitment, acknowledging the challenges that come with guiding a volunteer workforce. “You must ensure that when you talk to your members, you don’t give false information,” he stresses.
With a family of five children and eight grandchildren, Mr. Fatiaki feels fortunate to still contribute to his community. He expresses a desire to pass the torch to the younger generation when the time comes, stating, “I think it’s about time I hang up my boots and let the younger generation carry on.”
This story reflects the vital role of dedicated individuals like Mr. Fatiaki in nurturing and strengthening community ties. His commitment to service and encouragement of volunteerism are not only valuable but hopeful, inspiring a future generation of leaders to take up the mantle of community service with passion and integrity. Such leaders can help create a more engaged and supportive community, fostering resilience and hope for years to come.
