Mere Yabakivou, hailing from Nairukuruku Village, has successfully transformed her passion for beekeeping into a flourishing enterprise named Yabakivou Liquid Gold. After initially working in public health and aviation security, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted her to shift her focus to bee farming full-time.
Reflecting on her journey, Yabakivou shares, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, I came back home on leave and decided to take up bee farming full-time.” She began her beekeeping journey in 2012, facing numerous challenges such as equipment shortages. However, with the support from the Agriculture office in Tavua and her innovative spirit, she persevered.
Yabakivou explained the benefits of beekeeping: “With bees, we don’t have to worry about feeding them or providing water. I could check on them regularly to ensure their health.” Initially a family-oriented hobby, her honey production grew to meet an increasing demand, allowing her to sell 500ml bottles for $13 and 1kg bottles for $20.
In 2023, she officially registered her business and expanded her product lineup to include beeswax items. With the guidance of the Fiji Beekeepers Association and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mere’s combination of dedication and resourcefulness has turned her passion into a successful business, serving as a source of inspiration for others who aspire to pursue their dreams.
“Don’t look back or let challenges discourage you; trust in God to help you achieve your goals,” she counsels.
