Shyyal Kumar attributes her strong character to the loving yet firm guidance provided by her parents. The 24-year-old recently marked a significant milestone by graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the South Pacific in Suva last month.

While this achievement brings her closer to her aspirations, Shyyal remains grounded and reflective about the hardships she faced along her academic journey. She recalls the numerous late nights spent finishing assignments and studying lecture materials, as well as the emotional toll of being away from her family and friends in her hometown of Nadi.

Reflecting on the day she received her degree, Shyyal described the experience as ‘surreal.’ “The four years of studying were tough because I had to relocate to Suva, which was a significant change. I also felt a lot of pressure as I stepped out of my comfort zone to adapt to a new environment,” she shared.

Shyyal credits her parents with her success, stating, “They were always there for me, especially during times when I felt anxious, down, or isolated. They never pressured me to pursue a career in law; it was entirely my choice how I wanted to approach this profession.”

As someone from Votualevu in Nadi, moving to Suva was a substantial adjustment for her, but she took comfort in knowing her parents supported her. “I feel very honored and blessed, as this achievement is a result of my parents’ hard work and love,” she added.

With the ambition to become the first lawyer in her family, Shyyal aims to make her parents proud. “I hope to work in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) as I aspire to be a criminal lawyer. I understand that being a lawyer comes with its challenges. It demands a great deal of commitment and determination, and I wish to remain in my home country to contribute to improving its justice system.”

Shyyal emphasized the need for qualified criminal lawyers in Fiji, particularly given the rising crime rates. “We need to enhance fairness and justice in our system,” she stated.

Now that she has earned her degree, Shyyal is excited to pursue her Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP) and seek admission to the bar. She encourages aspiring lawyers in Fiji to stay dedicated and focused. “If you want to be a lawyer, consistency and concentration are key. You must put forth your best effort and give it your all.”
