Freddy Tora, a 30-year-old from Nailaga, Ba, has transformed his life through hard work and determination, achieving goals he once considered unattainable. His journey began with diving for mussels in the Ba River for family meals, and has led him to the challenging training of a United States Navy sailor.
After completing high school, Tora faced financial obstacles that hindered his aspirations. However, his resolve to succeed pushed him forward. On September 26, he celebrated his graduation as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (ABM), a role that involves managing aircraft operations on naval vessels. Tora completed three months of boot camp at the U.S. Naval Station in Great Lakes, Illinois, during which he learned valuable skills and developed mental fortitude.
Reflecting on his training, he expressed gratitude to a higher power for his accomplishments. Tora noted that the toughest aspect of training was the mental preparation required to maintain a positive mindset in various scenarios. Certain training phases reminded him of home, such as swimming tests that brought back memories of diving for mussels.
The youngest of four siblings to Maika Tora and Miriama Rokovui, Freddy was raised in Ba and attended local schools before briefly switching to Dilkusha Methodist High School to improve his examination scores. His pursuit of higher education continued at Fiji National University, where financial challenges forced him to pause his studies. He spent two years as a self-employed barber and event planner.
In 2019, Tora completed his studies at the University of the South Pacific and subsequently moved to the U.S. in 2022 to start anew. After settling in Kansas City and obtaining a certified nursing assistant license, he worked at a hospital for a year before relocating to California in 2023. Tora credits his family and various mentors for encouraging him to persevere through challenges.
Looking ahead, he plans to enroll in a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing program, motivated by his passion for helping others. Currently, he is stationed in Florida at his Aviation School, awaiting further assignments.
