Maraia Marama Vadei, a mother of three and newly admitted lawyer, is inspiring young and single mothers to chase their dreams by pursuing education. At just 28 years old, Vadei, who hails from Lomaiviti and has familial ties to Burebasaga in Rewa, is paving the way for others as the first lawyer in her family.
Balancing work, family responsibilities, and academic commitments, Vadei emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and striving for personal growth. She began her educational journey at Nasinu Gospel Primary School and later transitioned to Assemblies of God Primary School. Her high school education spanned two institutions: Assemblies of God High School and Rishikul Sanatan College, both in Nasinu.
While undertaking a foundation program in social studies at the Fiji National University, one of her motivated lecturers encouraged her to explore a career in law. Vadei, who initially came from a background in agricultural science, faced challenges in her law studies. However, she attributes her success to the invaluable support from her extended family.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, her father lost his job, prompting Vadei to work part-time at supermarkets and a cafeteria to support her family while pursuing her studies. She expressed gratitude for the encouragement from both sides of her family, stating, “I got big support from my family, my father, my mother, my uncle and aunties. From my husband’s side as well. They kept encouraging me, and for that, I am blessed and grateful.”
Reflecting on her journey, Vadei initially aspired to become a veterinarian, but she believes that becoming a lawyer was part of a greater plan. “It’s a blessing from God. I believe with God by your side, you can achieve anything in life,” she affirmed.
Vadei’s story serves as a beacon of hope and determination, highlighting how perseverance and family support can help overcome challenges. Her journey emphasizes that with commitment and faith, others can also pursue their dreams, regardless of their circumstances.
In summary, Maraia Marama Vadei’s journey from being a devoted mother to achieving her dream of becoming a lawyer is a testament to the power of education, family support, and faith. It encourages others, especially young mothers, to believe in their potential and strive for a better future.
