Abdul Imraz, a 23-year-old from Visama near Nausori, never imagined he would become a barber. Growing up with aspirations of working in Information Technology (IT), his path took an unexpected turn towards a career that highlighted his creativity.
After completing primary school at Makoi Muslim Primary School and secondary education at Nasinu Muslim College, Imraz realized that pursuing IT further might not be feasible. Like many of his peers, he faced challenges while contemplating his career options and decided to explore hairdressing.
He discovered his artistic talents and, combined with his friendly demeanor, secured a position at Super Fade Cut on Victoria Parade in Suva. “I love my work,” Imraz expressed. “My childhood dream was to work in IT, but due to various issues, I couldn’t follow that path. I decided to pursue barbering and salon services instead. I developed a keen interest and learned how to create different hairstyles.”
Imraz started working at a small barber shop in Nausori, where he acquired essential skills in the trade. Although he has moved on to a better opportunity, he appreciates the guidance and mentorship he received from his initial employer. “I am thankful to my former boss at Wananavu Barber Shop in Nausori, who gave me the chance to learn the trade,” he noted. “When I began, I had no experience in cutting hair, but now I can style any haircut my customers want.”
His decision to join Super Fade Cut was driven by the desire for a professional environment that offered quality haircuts and a comfortable setting for both customers and employees. Since joining, he has thrived, stating, “In the past four years, I have learned so much, and I feel there’s no need to work anywhere else. I am fully committed to my current position and enjoy every moment.”
Despite his dedication to barbering, Imraz balances work with leisure. He finds relaxation in playing soccer, exercising, and watching movies, acknowledging the importance of hobbies in enhancing mood and self-esteem.
Imraz emphasizes the value of hard work, passion, and determination. He encourages young people to pursue education, but if faced with setbacks, to explore their natural talents and find joy in what they do. “My advice to young school leavers is to not lose hope! You can accomplish amazing things, but you must be willing to learn and devote time to your endeavors.”
