The Mainayau Local Cuisine and Catering restaurant, located at the FNPF plaza in Suva, has established itself as a popular destination for authentic Fijian cuisine after six years in business. Owned by Sepesa Mainayau and his wife Volau, the restaurant offers a variety of iTaukei dishes that reflect their roots from Cikobia island in Lau.
The couple, both in their late 50s and parents to four children, relocated to the capital to turn their dream of owning a restaurant into reality, using savings accumulated over the years. Initially, the restaurant operated out of Grantham Plaza in Suva before moving to a larger space to accommodate their growing customer base.
“We started our business back in 2019 in Raiwaqa,” Mr. Mainayau explained. “We recognized a lack of representation of iTaukei cuisines in the food industry, and after facing challenges, we promoted our authentic meals with passion.”
As customer numbers increased, the couple needed a bigger location. Mr. Mainayau noted that overcoming common stereotypes about iTaukei businesses has been one of their biggest challenges, emphasizing that success is achievable through dedication and hard work.
He mentioned that sourcing ingredients has not been an issue, as they primarily obtain supplies from their village, ensuring they offer dishes that are true to their cultural heritage. The menu includes daily staples from the islands, with “fish in coconut milk” being a signature dish.
Neither Mr. nor Mrs. Mainayau came from a business background, but they have learned and adapted through small business training and their combined experiences. As they continue to support their family through the restaurant, they also see it as a means to promote iTaukei culture and preserve traditions through food.
Looking ahead, the couple plans to expand their offerings of authentic iTaukei meals to attract tourists.
