Mesake Vocevoce recounts the remarkable journey of his childhood, which has culminated in an exhilarating experience as a member of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians rugby team. Growing up in Narewa, Nadi, he watched his sporting heroes don the national jersey, and now he finds himself in their ranks, participating in the prestigious sport at an international level.
At a recent press conference with teammate Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, Vocevoce discussed their preparation for an upcoming Test match against Wales on Monday. Transitioning to the Flying Fijians from the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has been a significant milestone for him. Vocevoce expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to train alongside and learn from senior players he once idolized.
“I’m just so blessed, so grateful and thankful to be around these boys, especially the ones I watched play growing up,” he shared, highlighting the invaluable experience he has gained so far. He emphasized the importance of constantly improving his skills, aspiring to mirror the greatness of the seasoned players.
Reflecting on his recent match against Scotland, he found joy in competing on such an important international platform but acknowledged the expectations that come with it. “It was a good experience for me on this international stage; it’s a different environment, and I’m just trying to be myself and play,” Vocevoce noted.
He made his debut in the national jersey in September during the Pacific Nations Cup against Tonga, marking the beginning of a promising chapter in his rugby career.
This narrative not only highlights Vocevoce’s personal journey but also underscores the inspiring path of young athletes who aspire to represent their country. His story serves as a reminder that with hard work, dedication, and humility, achieving dreams is within reach, and that the future of rugby in Fiji looks bright with talents like Vocevoce emerging on the international stage.
