From Hymns to Harmony: Siovorosi Naisevu’s Musical Journey

Many aspiring musicians and singers often share similar beginnings on their path to musical achievement. While some credit their passion to the influence of people around them, many agree that the fundamental lessons of singing are often learned in church.

For 38-year-old Siovorosi Naisevu, his passion for music was ignited in childhood while listening to his relatives practice hymns at home. “It’s funny because never in my childhood did I think I would become interested in music,” he remarked. However, as he witnessed his aunt and uncles during choir practice over the years, his interest began to grow. “Eventually, I started to enjoy singing and learned the ways to be a good singer in church.”

Originating from Namara in Kadavu, Naisevu, who has maternal ties to the same village, has become a respected choirmaster and conductor for two church choirs: the Mount Hermon Church choir and the Wasewase ko Suvavou choir. He also serves as an assistant to the leader of the Kadavu Choir. “I joined the Kadavu Choir in 2006 and learned from Lai Veikoso and Tomasi Nacagilevu,” said Naisevu, who was only 20 at the time.

His growing interest fueled a desire to broaden his musical knowledge. “Now I can confidently say I have mastered the art of reading music sheets,” he stated. Naisevu is well-versed in tonic sol-fa, a musical notation system. “It’s surprising to discuss these things because, as a child, I never thought I would be a singer. My parents don’t sing, but the rest of my family does.”

His family’s musical heritage extends back four generations, with his ancestors renowned for creating traditional chants. “I believe that gift has been passed down to me. Although my parents don’t share the same passion, I take pride in the musical talent that runs in our blood. It has been a long time since a family member pursued this passion, and I am grateful to fulfill what I see as my destiny.”
