From Hymns to Harmony: One Man’s Musical Journey

Many aspiring musicians and vocalists often share similar backgrounds in their journey towards musical success. While some attribute their passion to the influence of others, a common foundation for many is found in the church, where they learn the basics of singing.

For 38-year-old Siovorosi Naisevu, his love for music began as a child listening to his relatives practice hymns at home. “Interestingly, during my childhood, I never imagined I would have an interest in singing,” Naisevu reflected. Over time, he became familiar with the practice as he observed his relatives during choir rehearsals, which sparked his growing interest in singing and becoming a good vocalist in the church.

Hailing from Namara in Kadavu, and with maternal ties to the same village, Naisevu is now a recognized choirmaster and conductor for two church choirs: Mount Hermon Church choir and Wasewase ko Suvavou choir. He also serves as an assistant to the Kadavu Choir leader. “I became a member of the Kadavu Choir in 2006 under the guidance of Lai Veikoso and Tomasi Nacagilevu when I was just 20 years old,” he noted.

As he delved deeper into music, Naisevu’s skills flourished. He acquired proficiency in reading music sheets and is well-versed in the tonic sol-fa, a system of musical notation. He acknowledged, “I often surprise myself when I discuss these topics, especially considering I never thought of becoming a singer in my youth. My parents don’t sing, but the rest of my family does.”

The musical legacy in his family spans four generations, with ancestors known for their expertise in traditional chants. Naisevu believes he has inherited this talent. “While my parents don’t share the same passion for music, I take pride in knowing it runs strongly in our blood. It’s been a long time since a family member pursued this passion, and I am thankful to be fulfilling what I consider my destiny.”
