From Hurdles to Hope: One Graduate’s Triumph Over Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi recently celebrated his graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific, marking a significant achievement in his life. Overcoming challenges, including a struggle with depression, he reflected on his long-held dream of obtaining a degree, which he initially sought after aspiring to become a lawyer a decade ago.

Redirecting his ambitions, Mr. Tavatuilagi opted to pursue a career as a bank officer instead, successfully completing his studies. He credited his positive mindset and support from family and quality relationships as key factors in his journey.

“I associated myself more with quality people, and finding the right support network,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of a supportive family in overcoming challenges, declaring, “I was determined to get out of the shackles of depression. I challenged myself to see things differently and be positive.”

Originally from Nabouciwa in Tailevu, with maternal links to Nasaqalau, Lakeba in Lau, the 33-year-old is focused on becoming the best version of himself. He recognized depression as a major obstacle during his academic journey but noted the encouragement from peers who believed in him as a motivating force.

“God was at the center of it all. I’m just grateful for the gift of family and friendship,” he concluded, reflecting on his experiences and triumphs.
