Ana Vetau always envisioned a career in the hotel industry, but her life took a turn after marrying and helping her husband on their farm. She discovered a newfound joy in farming and selling her produce at the market.
At 35 years old, the Narata Village resident in Nadroga has become a well-known figure outside the Suva Municipal Market, where she sells boiled corn. She emphasizes that hard work is essential for success, acknowledging the challenges life presents.
“After completing my Form 6, I enrolled in the School of Hospitality because I always wanted to work in hotels,” Vetau shared. “I even did my attachment at the Marina Apartment in Lami. But after getting married in Nadroga, I joined my husband on the farm.”
Farming is a passion for Vetau, who was born in Namosi. “I always enjoyed farming, and when I joined my husband, I loved it. There’s pride and satisfaction in harvesting crops and selling them at the market,” she said.
Despite the rewards, Vetau noted the difficulties inherent in farming. “Our biggest challenge is the weather and the impacts of climate change. Floods and droughts can devastate our produce, often washing away everything we plant.”
To ensure a steady income, she explained that they sometimes buy from other farmers when their own produce runs low. “However, we benefit from fresh vegetables, and working on the farm keeps us healthy and active. My four children also accompany us to the farm at times.”
Vetau encourages others to utilize their land effectively. “People should not leave land idle. Planting is beneficial, and seeing the fruits of your labor brings great satisfaction. This inspires me to keep going,” she advised, particularly encouraging youth struggling to find jobs to consider agriculture as a viable option.
