From Hope to Harvest: A Father’s Journey into Organic Auditing

Sunil Kumar, a dedicated father and husband, has taken a brave leap into the world of organic auditing after 14 years of service at Homes of Hope (HOH) in Fiji. Transitioning from a volunteer to the Team Leader in Social Training and Enterprise, he focused on empowering women and children to break free from the cycles of forced sex within the South Pacific. This experience ignited his passion for exploring organic farming, which subsequently guided him toward a new career path.

In 2022, Kumar expanded his knowledge through organics training in the Solomon Islands and later completed his initial organic auditor training program with Ecocert in 2023. His persistence and commitment culminated in an invitation from the Pacific Community, backed by the European Union’s SAFE Pacific project, to further his skills in Cambodia. This opportunity significantly enhanced his journey toward becoming a recognized freelance Organic Auditor.

Kumar’s role as an Organic Auditor involves inspecting farms and food production facilities to verify compliance with organic practices, ensuring no harmful chemicals are utilized and that natural methods are employed in cultivation. His ambition goes beyond personal career advancement; he has a heartfelt commitment to advocating for sustainable practices, particularly for women in the agricultural sector.

His passion for sustainability was reinforced through several training sessions where he gained vital skills, such as analytical thinking and problem-solving, alongside important organic farming fundamentals. He aims to contribute to a more sustainable future, emphasizing the necessity to preserve the ecosystem for future generations.

Kumar credits his commitment to organic farming and auditing with a vision to improve the global landscape of organic agriculture. As he embarks on this new professional journey, he continues to seek additional training opportunities, recognizing that this is just the beginning of his development as a freelance Organic Auditor.

Kumar’s story not only highlights his professional transition but serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating how individuals can achieve personal growth while promoting sustainability. The support from initiatives like SAFE Pacific addresses challenges such as the shortage of qualified auditors in the Pacific region and empowers local farmers by reducing their reliance on international auditors.

This focus on developing local expertise in organic farming is vital for enhancing export capacities and enriching the agricultural landscape of the region, steering it towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
