In the Solove Sector of Fiji, Seqaqa, a remarkable story of perseverance and innovation is unfolding within the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly changed his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, meeting a crucial need in the industry.
After leaving school at Form 4, Murti worked as a cane harvester before serving as a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He discovered his true passion when he identified a significant opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, inspired by a new concept from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took a bold step to become a transport service provider. “I observed a shortage of tractors in the sector, which made it difficult for farmers to prepare their land,” Murti stated. “Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”
Starting with just one tractor, Murti utilized his experience from Food Process to help local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing reliable services quickly gained recognition among farmers in the area. Today, his business has grown considerably, now boasting a fleet of six tractors and essential implements such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all crucial for sugarcane farming.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to grow the business,” he remarked. “The work order system allowed me to operate it like a proper business, and the farmers benefited as well.”
Murti has also returned to cane farming himself. This year, he cultivated 7.5 acres of cane and is planning to expand further.
