In the Solove Sector of Fiji, a remarkable success story is emerging that underscores the potential of perseverance and innovation in the sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly improved both his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, filling a crucial need within the industry.
Having left school after Form 4, Murti initially worked as a cane harvester before becoming a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He identified a unique opportunity within Fiji’s sugarcane sector, particularly with a new initiative proposed by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took the daring step of establishing a transport service. “I noticed a shortage of tractors in the sector, making land preparation difficult for farmers,” he explained. He recognized that many growers were unable to pay upfront for services, but through the FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, he was able to provide services without requiring immediate cash payments. “It was a win-win for everyone,” he added.
Starting with only one tractor, Murti applied his experience from Food Process to assist local farmers in preparing their land. His commitment to reliable service soon drew attention from farmers across the sector. Today, his business has grown significantly, with a fleet of six tractors and a variety of essential implements, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all crucial for sugarcane farming.
“Thanks to perseverance and the support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to expand the business,” he stated. “The work order system allowed me to operate it like a proper business, benefiting the farmers in the process.”
In addition to his service, Murti has returned to cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning further expansion.
