Sanjay Murti has revolutionized his own life and the livelihoods of numerous sugarcane farmers by stepping into the role of a tractor service provider (TSP), fulfilling a vital need in Fiji’s agricultural sector.
Mr. Murti’s journey began after he left school at Form 4, where he initially worked as a cane harvester before becoming a manager at Batiri Citrus Farm. However, his true passion and opportunity emerged when he identified a gap in Fiji’s sugarcane industry, particularly after a new initiative by the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC).
In 2022, with support from the FSC and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti made the courageous decision to become a TSP. He recognized that many sugarcane farmers struggled with land preparation due to a shortage of tractors and often could not afford to pay up front. By utilizing the FSC’s business plan and work order system, he was able to provide vital services without the burden of immediate payments, creating a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Starting with a single tractor, Mr. Murti utilized his experience from his time at Food Process to assist farmers in preparing their lands. His commitment to dependable services quickly gained him recognition within the farming community. Today, his venture has blossomed into a flourishing business, boasting a fleet of six tractors and an array of vital implements, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.
Mr. Murti acknowledges the challenges he faced but credits perseverance and the support from FSC officials for his business’s growth. The structured work order system enabled him to operate professionally, benefitting both his operations and the farmers he serves.
In addition to his successful tractor service business, Mr. Murti has resumed cane farming after several years, cultivating 7.5 acres this year with plans to expand to 30 acres. His ambition is not only to position himself as a leading TSP but also to become an influential cultivator within the sugarcane industry. He envisions further expansion by acquiring a digger and other mechanical equipment to broaden the services he offers to farmers.
Farmers who once faced challenges with accessing machinery now rely on Mr. Murti for field preparations. His journey, driven by determination, intelligent financial moves, and community support, serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved.
At 47, Mr. Murti urges fellow farmers to seize available opportunities: “There’s always a way forward if you’re willing to put in the effort.” His story stands as a hopeful testament to the potential for growth and success within the agricultural community, encouraging others to strive for improvement and innovation in their own practices.
In summary, Mr. Murti’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and a commitment to supporting fellow farmers, showcasing the power of determination and community collaboration in fostering agricultural development.
