In the Solove Sector of Fiji, an inspiring success story is emerging that showcases the determination and creativity among the sugarcane farming community.
Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has made a significant impact on the lives of numerous cane farmers by providing essential tractor services to the sector.
After leaving school after Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester before advancing to the role of manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His true potential was realized when he identified a pressing need within Fiji’s sugarcane sector, spurred by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti took the daring step to become a transport service provider. He recognized a lack of tractors in the sector, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their land effectively.
“Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without the need for immediate cash payments,” said Murti. “It was a win-win for everyone.”
Beginning with just one tractor, Murti leveraged his previous experience to assist local farmers with land preparation. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly garnered attention from farmers across the area.
Today, his business has grown substantially, now operating a fleet of six tractors and various essential equipment like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers—crucial tools for successful sugarcane farming.
“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and my team, I was able to expand the business,” he shared. “The work order system allowed me to operate it like a proper business, and the farmers benefitted as well.”
Moreover, Murti has returned to cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning to expand further.
