Sanjay Murti has significantly improved both his life and the livelihoods of numerous sugarcane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider (TSP), filling a crucial gap in Fiji’s agricultural sector.
His journey began after he left school at Form 4, progressing from working as a cane harvester to becoming a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). However, it was in 2022 that he discovered a remarkable opportunity within the sugarcane industry as the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) introduced a new initiative.
Recognizing the severe shortage of tractors, which hindered farmers’ ability to prepare their land, Murti made the decision to launch his TSP business with the backing of the FSC and the Ministry of Agriculture. He explained, “Many growers couldn’t afford to pay up-front, but with FSC’s business plan concept and work order system, I could offer services without needing immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”
Starting with only one tractor, Murti leveraged his past experience to help farmers prepare their lands. His unwavering commitment to providing dependable services soon garnered attention across the farming community. Today, his business has grown remarkably, now operating six tractors and a variety of essential farm implements, including disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.
Despite facing challenges, Murti’s determination, combined with support from FSC officials, has enabled him to expand his business successfully. He added, “The work order system allowed me to run it like a proper business, and the farmers benefited too.”
In addition to his thriving tractor service, Murti has returned to cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year alone and planning to enlarge his farm to 30 acres. His ambition is not just to be a major TSP but also to become a significant cultivator within the sugarcane industry.
“I want to purchase a digger and other mechanical implements to offer even more services to the farmers,” he noted, emphasizing how farmers who previously struggled to access machinery now rely on his services for land preparation.
Murti’s journey exemplifies perseverance and the importance of making informed financial decisions while fostering community support. At 47, he hopes his achievements can inspire fellow farmers, urging them to seize available opportunities.
“There’s always a way forward if you’re willing to put in the effort,” he concluded.
This inspiring tale of transformation underscores the potential for growth and hope in agricultural communities, highlighting how one determined individual can make a significant difference. Mr. Murti’s story serves not only as an example of success but also a source of motivation for others seeking to uplift their livelihoods through innovation and hard work.
