Sanjay Murti has made a significant impact on his life and the lives of many sugarcane farmers in Fiji by becoming a tractor service provider (TSP), fulfilling a vital need within the agricultural sector.

Mr. Murti’s career began after he left school at Form 4, initially working as a cane harvester before advancing to a managerial position at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). His true potential emerged when he identified a great opportunity in the sugarcane industry, sparked by an innovative initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

In 2022, after receiving backing from the FSC and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti ventured into the TSP role. He recognized a pressing shortage of tractors, which posed challenges for farmers in preparing their land. To address this, he implemented a business model that allowed farmers to access services without immediate cash payments, creating a beneficial scenario for both parties.

Starting with a single tractor, Mr. Murti utilized his prior experience to assist farmers, quickly earning their trust. His business has since grown to include a fleet of six tractors and a variety of necessary tools such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers.

The journey has not been without challenges, but with steadfast determination and support from FSC officials, he has been able to expand his operations. In addition to his TSP business, Mr. Murti has re-entered cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning to scale up to 30 acres.

Looking ahead, Mr. Murti aims to expand his services further by purchasing additional equipment to support even more farmers. He recognizes the transformative impact he has had on farmers who once struggled to access machinery; they now depend on his services to ease their workload.

Mr. Murti’s story stands as a testament to resilience and opportunity in agriculture. He encourages others in the farming community to seize available chances for advancement, stating, “There’s always a way forward if you’re willing to put in the effort.” His success not only embodies a personal victory but serves as inspiration for fellow farmers to strive for growth and improvement in their own operations.

Overall, Mr. Murti’s journey illustrates the power of hard work, strategic thinking, and community support in achieving success in the agricultural sector. His story serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with determination, one can overcome obstacles and contribute positively to their community.
