Siteri Namere Nanovo’s remarkable journey to becoming the dux of Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka is truly inspiring. Unlike many of her classmates who enjoy strong family support, Ms. Nanovo has shouldered significant responsibilities from an early age, including household chores and preparing meals for her family before heading to school.
At just 18, Siteri and her five siblings are raised primarily by their father, Ratu Sela Vunakasi Nanovo. Ms. Nanovo dedicated her dux trophy to him, expressing immense gratitude for his unwavering commitment to their education. “This trophy is for my Ratu,” she said. “He has selflessly looked after us because he knows that a good education will lead us to a brighter future.”
Their mother left the family when Siteri was young, which deepened her determination to succeed academically and aspire for a better life. “I vowed to study hard and get to university because I want a life better than this,” she shared. Her motivation is to ensure her father’s sacrifices do not go in vain. “First, I want to give back to my father by providing him with a comfortable life,” she said, emphasizing the importance of family and gratitude.
Ratu Sela works in the construction sector, and the family resides near the school in Natabua. She expressed her appreciation for her father’s dual role as both a provider and a nurturing figure. “He took on the role of both mother and father, and witnessing his sacrifices has inspired me to pursue a better education and a fulfilling career.”
Despite the hardships they face together, Ratu Sela continues to encourage his children to persevere, reminding them that better days are ahead. Ms. Nanovo credits her success to her faith, stating, “It was through God’s strength that I managed to prioritize my studies.”
Looking ahead, Ms. Nanovo aspires to study law at the University of Fiji next year, aiming to build a promising future for herself and her family.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and determination, showcasing how love and support within a family can guide one toward achieving great things against all odds. Ms. Nanovo’s commitment to her education and her family sets a commendable example for peers, illustrating that hard work and perseverance can lead to success.
