Olivia Cavuka, at 57 years old, is steering the family-operated Yaukawa Farm, located on 25 acres of land in Vitogo Paipai, Lautoka. The farm has a productive 7 acres, cultivating a diverse range of crops such as pineapples, sugarcane, limes, coconuts, cassava, and mangoes, which are sold at a local market stall.

Ms. Cavuka’s journey has not been without difficulties. After the sudden passing of her husband six years ago due to a heart attack, she found herself alone at the helm of the farm. With three children who were still in school, she rose to the challenge of becoming both the primary provider and caretaker for her family. “It was a journey; I had to step in and take over the family business because we had no choice,” she recounted.

Despite lacking formal agricultural training, Ms. Cavuka drew on the knowledge she acquired while working alongside her husband. Together, they had previously decided to commercialize their land by focusing on pineapple production, and she credits many of the farm’s successes to the solid groundwork her husband laid.

Financial struggles compounded her responsibilities, as Ms. Cavuka inherited the burden of repaying a loan taken out for the sugarcane farm after her husband’s death. Transportation was another hurdle, since her husband previously handled logistics; after his passing, she had to hire help to transport goods, adding to her financial strain. The weather also posed challenges, particularly since their farm sits on a hillside where operations are frequently interrupted by rain.

Not one to back down, Ms. Cavuka leveraged her market stall as a source of income, which became essential for paying workers and sustaining the farm’s operations. She is also part of the South Pacific Business Development, a microfinance network that offers support to women entrepreneurs, which she says has been invaluable in her journey.

With an enduring spirit, Ms. Cavuka emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and collaboration with fellow market vendors. Her resilience has sparked respect from those around her, including her children. “They understand the value of what their father left behind,” she shared. Her commitment to ensuring their education is evident, as she teaches them the significance of hard work and perseverance.

Looking ahead, she has high hopes for Yaukawa Farm, including plans to purchase a vehicle to alleviate transportation challenges. Ms. Cavuka encourages other women, especially single mothers, to cultivate a strong mindset and to believe in their capacity to navigate obstacles.
