Fiji-born Australian powerlifter Varun Vimlesh Lal has transcended the world of lifting weights to embody the aspirations and resilience of his family. On November 15, during the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States, Lal made an impressive mark by securing third place in the 125kg category. Egypt claimed the gold medal, while the USA took home the silver.
Currently residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal reflects on his journey from humble beginnings in Ba to the competitive international powerlifting scene. Born and raised in Navau, Ba, he was immersed in a farming community where his parents worked tirelessly, with his father spending long hours in the sun to provide for their family. This dedication instilled strong values in Lal, inspiring him to pursue success against all odds.
His dreams of a better life led him to Australia, where he enrolled in civil engineering studies. Adjusting to a new country proved to be a challenge, but he found unwavering support from his brother Rajneel and sister-in-law Vennita, who helped him navigate this significant transition.
Lal didn’t stop with academics; a year ago, he joined a powerlifting team and quickly escalated to represent Australia under the CAPO federation, achieving this milestone within just nine months. He expressed his ambition to deadlift between 230-240 kg, emphasizing the pride he feels in representing Australia, especially given his background in a small Indo-Fijian farming community.
However, his journey has not been without difficulties. Upon arriving in Australia, Lal discovered his mechanical engineering credentials did not meet local standards, but he received invaluable support from colleagues Don and Dan. Currently, he works as a mechanical technician at an ice rink—a dream he never envisioned while growing up in Fiji.
Recently, his family faced an unexpected challenge when his father had a serious accident in Fiji. Despite this setback, Lal remains motivated, declaring he will lift for his father in future competitions. His drive is not just about personal success but also about inspiring others, particularly young people in the Pacific.
Lal poignantly notes that his world debut transcends sports; it represents breaking barriers and achieving dreams despite humble beginnings. He carries his father’s name as a source of pride and motivation, hoping to inspire others to overcome obstacles and embrace their passions.
His partner, Keisha, has also played a pivotal role in his journey, providing emotional support through life’s trials, which he deeply appreciates.
In summary, Varun Vimlesh Lal serves as a beacon of hope and perseverance, showing that with hard work and dedication, anyone from any background can reach remarkable heights and inspire others along the way. His story is a testament to the power of dreams and the importance of community and family support in achieving success.
