From Fiji to Glory: Varun Lal’s Unstoppable Journey in Powerlifting

Fiji-born Varun Vimlesh Lal, an Australian powerlifter, exemplifies determination and the pursuit of dreams, proving that challenges can be overcome through hard work and perseverance. Recently, Lal achieved a remarkable feat by securing third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States on November 15, with competitors from Egypt and the USA taking home gold and silver respectively.

Now residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal shares his inspiring story, originating from the humble farming community of Navau in Ba, where his parents worked diligently as sugarcane farmers. His father’s relentless effort, often laboring under the sun for long hours, instilled in him values of sacrifice and dedication. With aspirations for a brighter future, Lal moved to Australia to pursue his studies in Civil Engineering.

“Relocating alone posed one of the toughest challenges in my life,” Lal recalled. However, the unwavering support from his brother Rajneel Prakash and sister-in-law Vennita Prakash helped him navigate his new environment, for which he expresses eternal gratitude.

Lal’s success in powerlifting is a testament to his commitment; just a year ago, he joined a powerlifting team and, in a stunning turn of events, had the opportunity to represent Australia in America. He aims to deadlift between 230-240 kg, proud to represent Australia while coming from a modest background in Fiji.

Despite initial professional challenges as his mechanical engineering qualifications didn’t meet local standards, Lal received encouragement and assistance from colleagues, which allowed him to adapt and thrive in his new role as a mechanical technician in an ice rink—an opportunity he never envisioned back home.

His journey took a somber turn when his father suffered a serious accident in Fiji two weeks prior to the world competition. “While he’s recovering, it’s difficult not having him around during my preparation. He’s been my motivation to pursue my dreams, and I’ll lift in his honor at the upcoming event,” Lal expressed.

Lal emphasizes that his debut on the global stage transcends sports; it’s about breaking down barriers and showcasing that individuals from small backgrounds can achieve greatness. He acknowledges the continuous support from his partner, Keisha, who has been his emotional anchor throughout his journey.

His story embodies the message that unwavering determination can lead to extraordinary achievements, regardless of the obstacles faced. “We can achieve our dreams, and I hope to inspire young people in the Pacific to pursue their passions and strive for their goals,” he remarked, carrying his father’s legacy proudly as he steps onto the world stage.

This inspiring journey sheds light on the power of resilience and community support, reminding us that with hard work and determination, dreams can become reality. It not only provides hope to aspiring athletes but also encourages everyone facing challenges to keep pushing forward.
