Fiji-born Australian powerlifter Varun Vimlesh Lal’s journey transcends the world of sports; it embodies the essence of resilience and inspiration. Recently, Lal secured a commendable third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States on November 15, with Egypt and the USA earning the gold and silver medals respectively.
Currently residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal passionately shares his inspiring story, from his origins in Ba to achieving international acclaim in powerlifting, aimed particularly at motivating the youth in the Pacific region. Growing up in a farming community, Lal’s parents worked diligently as sugarcane farmers, instilling in him a strong work ethic. His father labored long hours under the sun to ensure Lal had opportunities for a better future.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including adapting to life in Australia as he pursued Civil Engineering studies, Lal’s tenacity led him to formulating new dreams. He credits the unwavering support from his brother Rajneel and sister-in-law Vennita for helping him navigate his new environment.
On a transformational path, Lal joined a powerlifting team just a year ago, and within nine months, he earned the extraordinary opportunity to represent Australia under the CAPO federation in the USA. “My goal is to deadlift 230-240 kg. Coming from a farming community in Fiji and representing Australia in powerlifting feels surreal,” Lal remarked.
However, his journey was not without hurdles; when he arrived, his mechanical engineering knowledge failed to meet Australian standards, leaving him feeling overwhelmed. Fortunately, colleagues like Don and Dan played crucial roles in assisting him to adapt and grow professionally, leading to his current role as a mechanical technician in an ice rink—something he could hardly have imagined back home in Fiji.
In recent weeks, Lal faced emotional turmoil when his father was involved in a serious accident in Fiji. As he prepares for the competition, he carries his father’s spirit with him, committing to lift in his honor. “Although my dad can’t physically be at the competition, he’ll forever remain in my heart,” he shared.
Lal’s journey highlights breaking barriers and proving that anyone from a small Indo-Fijian community can achieve greatness on a global stage. He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his partner, Keisha, who has been an emotional anchor during his journey.
In the end, Lal aims to exemplify how determination can lead to significant achievements, even amid adversity. He aspires to inspire the youth of the Pacific to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles in their paths.
This uplifting story serves as a testament to the power of hard work and dedication, encouraging others to chase their dreams regardless of their circumstances.
Overall, Lal’s inspiring narrative not only showcases personal achievement but also embodies hope and resilience for future generations.
