Fiji-born Australian powerlifter Varun Vimlesh Lal’s journey transcends weightlifting; it embodies the pursuit of dreams and the resilience to overcome life’s challenges. Recently, on November 15, he proudly represented Australia at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the United States, securing a commendable third place in the 125kg category, with competitors from Egypt and the USA taking home the gold and silver medals, respectively.
Now residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal’s story travels from his modest upbringing in Ba, Fiji, where his parents worked diligently as sugarcane farmers, to the international powerlifting stage. His father’s unwavering commitment, often spending long hours under the sun, instilled in Lal a value for hard work and determination, highlighting the sacrifices made for a better future.
Motivated by dreams of success, Lal moved to Australia to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. Adjusting to a new life was a challenge, but with the steadfast support of his brother Rajneel Prakash and sister-in-law Vennita Prakash, he found his footing in a foreign land, for which he expresses deep gratitude.
Lal’s involvement in powerlifting began just a year ago, and within mere months, he earned the opportunity to represent Australia under the CAPO federation in the USA. He aspires to deadlift between 230-240 kg, reflecting on the surreal experience of achieving such a feat as a representative from a small farming community in Fiji.
Professionally, his transition to Australia was initially challenging, especially as his mechanical engineering knowledge did not align with Australian standards. However, the support from colleagues like Don and Dan helped him grow, eventually leading him to his current position as a mechanical technician at an ice rink—a career he never imagined back in Fiji.
Recently, Lal faced an emotional hurdle with his father’s serious accident back home in Fiji. Despite his father’s absence during the upcoming competition, Lal is determined to lift for him, carrying the spirit of his father and the motivation to succeed. He emphasizes that his debut transcends sports; it’s about breaking barriers and inspiring others from similar backgrounds.
Lal expresses gratitude to his partner, Keisha, who has been a pillar of support, helping him navigate the ups and downs of his journey. He underscores that with determination, anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they face. He aims to inspire the youth of the Pacific to chase their passions and strive for their goals, fueled by the pride of representing his father’s legacy.
