Fiji-born Varun Vimlesh Lal, an Australian powerlifter, is rising beyond challenges, inspiring not only his family but also the youth of the Pacific. On November 15, he proudly represented Australia, achieving a remarkable third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships in the United States. Egypt and the USA took home the gold and silver medals, respectively.

Lal, now living in Park Ridge, Brisbane, shares his story of hard work and dedication, which began in a small farming community in Navau, Ba. He grew up watching his parents toil as sugarcane farmers, instilling in him the values of perseverance and sacrifice. His father, who worked long hours under the sun, inspired Lal to aspire for a better life, leading him to Australia to study Civil Engineering.

Relocating proved challenging, but the support from his brother Rajneel Prakash and sister-in-law Vennita Prakash was instrumental in his transition. “Navigating this new country was tough, but their guidance made it easier,” Lal expressed.

Lal’s journey took an exciting turn when he joined a powerlifting team a year ago. Within nine months, his dedication earned him the opportunity to compete for Australia under the CAPO federation in the USA. With lofty goals set, he aims to deadlift 230-240 kg, and he cherishes the pride of representing Australia despite his humble beginnings.

Despite initial obstacles in his mechanical engineering career, Lal’s determination shone through, supported by colleagues who helped him adapt to the work environment. His current job as a mechanical technician in an ice rink is a significant achievement he never imagined during his upbringing in Fiji.

Recently, however, his family faced a setback when his father had a severe accident in Fiji. “While he’s recovering, it’s difficult not having him present as I prepare for competitions,” Lal reflected, recognizing his father’s influence in his pursuits.

For Lal, this competition goes beyond athletics; it’s a testament to breaking barriers and proving that origins do not define one’s achievements. He emphasizes the importance of resilience and inspiration, especially for young people in the Pacific. “We can achieve our dreams, regardless of challenges. My father’s name motivates me, and I hope to inspire others to chase their passions.”

With a strong sense of purpose and unwavering support from his partner, Keisha, who has been his emotional anchor, Lal’s journey embodies hope and the belief that hard work can lead to extraordinary accomplishments.

In summary, Varun Vimlesh Lal’s story of ambition and perseverance serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing how one’s background can fuel a passion for greatness. As he continues his journey in powerlifting, he carries not only the dreams of his family but also the hopes of many young individuals who look up to him as a beacon of possibilities.
