Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who faced academic setbacks by dropping out of Year 12, turned her fortunes around by earning a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. She celebrated this achievement alongside 33 other graduates from the Naleba Training Centre in Labasa, a program under the Ministry of Youth.
Ana encountered difficulties last year when she did not pass the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE), but a second chance at the Naleba Training Centre has provided her with the tools and support to succeed in her studies. She expressed her ambitions to further her education at either the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific to deepen her agricultural knowledge.
Determined to provide for her family, Ana remarked, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs.” To celebrate her achievement, she invited her grandmother to the graduation ceremony, highlighting the strong support system that has helped her throughout her journey. Her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, 67, expressed pride and emotional gratitude for her granddaughter’s accomplishments, affirming the belief that with family support and determination, success is achievable.
Ana also faced personal challenges while adjusting to life at the girls’ dormitory, feeling loneliness away from her family. However, she persevered and emerged victorious, using her experiences to inspire others. She encouraged students who may feel discouraged, saying, “There are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life,” signaling her belief in resilience and the importance of support systems.
