Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who faced setbacks by dropping out of Year 12, has shown remarkable resilience by earning a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. Graduating alongside 33 peers at the Naleba Training Centre in Labasa, Ms. Yabakivou’s journey illustrates the power of perseverance and the importance of support systems.
Despite the disappointment of failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination last year, Ana was determined to re-engage with her education at the Naleba Training Centre. She plans to continue her studies at the Fiji National University’s Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year, where she hopes to delve deeper into agricultural studies.
Her dreams are firmly rooted in a desire to better her family’s life. “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs,” she expressed. Inviting her grandmother to the graduation ceremony served as a heartfelt tribute to the family support that has fueled her ambitions.
Ana credited her success to the encouragement of her family and acknowledged the vital role of her teachers and the centre’s management. Her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, beamed with pride during the ceremony, expressing her faith in Ana’s future. “Nothing is impossible if a student has family support and the determination to achieve their goal,” she stated.
Reflecting on her time at the centre, Ms. Yabakivou admitted that adjusting to dormitory life away from her family was challenging. However, she persevered, stating, “My message to students who feel down today is not to give up, because there are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This story of determination serves as an inspiration not only to students facing hurdles but also emphasizes the vital role of family and community support in pursuing education and achieving one’s goals. Ana’s journey is a testament that with resilience and support, overcoming challenges is indeed possible.
