Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who faced a setback after dropping out in Year 12, has shown remarkable determination by graduating with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture. This accomplishment was celebrated alongside 33 other graduates from the Ministry of Youth’s Naleba Training Centre in Labasa.
Despite experiencing challenges, including failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Ms. Yabakivou seized the opportunity to enroll at the Naleba Training Centre and is optimistic about her future. She plans to further her education by enrolling at the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific next year, enhancing her expertise in agriculture.
Expressing her aspirations, Ms. Yabakivou stated, “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs.” Her graduation day was made special by the presence of her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, who was a source of inspiration and support throughout her journey.
Ms. Yabakivou credited her family, particularly her grandmother, with being her pillars of strength. The pride and joy displayed by Ms. Solokai during the ceremony highlight the impact of family support on achieving goals, as she tearfully expressed her belief in her granddaughter’s success.
Throughout her time at the centre, Ms. Yabakivou faced the challenge of living independently away from her family. “It was hard initially to adjust to life without my family,” she reflected, but her resilience led her to graduate successfully.
In her inspiring message to other students who may feel disheartened, she emphasized not to give up, stating, “There are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This story of perseverance illustrates that with determination and support, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. Ana Yabakivou serves as a beacon of hope for others, showing that setbacks can lead to new beginnings.
