From Dreams to Justice: Shyyal Kumar’s Journey to Law

Shyyal Kumar attributes her strong character to the loving yet firm guidance of her parents. The 24-year-old recently celebrated a major milestone by graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the South Pacific in Suva.

This achievement marks a significant step towards fulfilling her dreams, but Shyyal remains grounded, reflecting on the difficulties she faced throughout her journey. She recalls the long nights spent completing assignments and studying lecture notes while also feeling the strain of being away from her hometown of Nadi, along with her parents and friends.

Looking back, Shyyal describes the moment she received her diploma as surreal and emotionally overwhelming. “Four years of studying were tough because I had to relocate to Suva, which was a significant change. I faced a lot of pressure stepping out of my comfort zone and adapting to a new environment,” she shared.

Shyyal emphasizes that her parents were instrumental in her success. “They were always there for me, especially during times of worry, sadness, or loneliness. They never pressured me to become a lawyer; it was my decision on how to pursue this career path,” she noted.

Originating from Votualevu in Nadi, she recognized the significant change that moving to Suva brought. “Managing everything on my own was challenging, but I always knew my parents supported me. I feel incredibly honored and grateful, as this accomplishment is a result of their hard work and love.”

Shyyal is determined to make her parents proud as she is about to become the first lawyer in her family. She aims to work in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, aspiring to become a criminal lawyer. “I understand that being a lawyer is challenging and requires immense commitment and dedication. My goal is to remain in Fiji and contribute to improving its justice system,” she stated.

Shyyal believes that Fiji needs skilled criminal lawyers to address rising crime rates and promote fairness and justice. As she looks ahead, she plans to complete her Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP) and gain admission to the bar.

Encouraging other young Fijians interested in law, Shyyal advises them to stay focused. “If you want to be a lawyer, consistency and focus are key. Always strive to give your best and put in 100 percent effort.”
