From Dreams to Determination: One Engineer’s Journey

A father’s impact shapes character, instills values, and ignites aspirations. Raahyl Nair, a 24-year-old civil engineering graduate from the University of the South Pacific, deeply understands this, attributing his achievements to his late father.

Hailing from Tavua but raised in Suva, Raahyl’s journey illustrates a remarkable blend of personal challenges and professional success. “I grew up in a typical Indian household,” Raahyl remarked. “Indian parents are known to be quite strict, and while I had a passion for soccer, it was my mother who firmly encouraged me to focus on my education.”

In contrast, Raahyl’s father adopted a more relaxed approach, urging him to enjoy life and take advantage of opportunities. “He encouraged me to go out and play and pursue my passion. He taught me that life is about enjoyment.”

This balanced style of parenting cultivated in Raahyl a deep appreciation for both diligence and enjoyment. His educational journey began at Nasinu Gospel Primary School, followed by Rishikul Primary School and Rishikul College. Initially interested in aviation and automotive subjects, Raahyl later shifted towards civil engineering, a decision influenced by his father’s career.

His father worked in the Ministry of Agriculture and had connections in civil engineering that sparked Raahyl’s interest. “As a child, I used to visit his workplace, where many people encouraged me to pursue this field since very few were doing it at the time,” he shared. “I started learning software related to civil engineering, which enhanced my knowledge.”

Despite aspiring to be a pilot, Raahyl’s plans pivoted when he was awarded a National Toppers Scholarship, which did not cover aviation studies. Guided by his father’s encouragement and the exposure to civil engineering from his father’s colleagues, he chose to earn a degree in that field.

Tragically, during his first year at university, Raahyl lost his father. This loss brought with it significant responsibilities as he had to manage household tasks, support his mother, and oversee the family’s taxi business while keeping up with his studies. These circumstances forced him to mature rapidly.

“I was never involved in these matters before, but through this journey, I learned many life lessons and how to manage my time effectively,” he said. “I would say I grew significantly. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that education never ceases.”

Today, civil engineering, which was once a niche field, has become increasingly competitive. Nonetheless, Raahyl advises prospective students to fully embrace the profession. “My advice is to take the opportunity, pursue your passion, and always remember those who supported you.”

Reflecting on his journey, Raahyl underscores the importance of education and staying updated with evolving technologies. His experience has not only been about gaining knowledge but also about adapting and growing through life’s challenges. As for his future, Raahyl remains open to new possibilities while acknowledging the uncertainties that lie ahead.

“We’ll see what tomorrow brings, but until then, I will continue to build the life my parents envisioned for me.”
