Riya Ram’s enthusiasm for a career in science was ignited by a dream. This aspiration led her to Gujarat, India, several years ago, where she pursued her studies and has now returned to Fiji after earning her bachelor’s degree in forensic science.

At just 21 years old, Riya grew up in the capital city with a single mother who instilled strong values in her. She believes that while the path to success is often fraught with challenges, it can be navigated through hard work and commitment.

“There will be obstacles, but if you are passionate about what you do, those challenges will only make you stronger,” Riya stated. “Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone—whether it’s studying abroad, pursuing a unique field, or taking on new opportunities. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and remember that persistence and hard work will always pay off.”

Riya developed an interest in forensic science during her secondary education at Yat Sen Secondary School in Suva. “My choice to pursue forensic science came from my fascination with the intersection of science and justice,” she explained. “During school, I discovered the field of criminal justice and the vital role that science plays in solving crimes. I realized that forensic science could significantly impact Fiji, where the field is still evolving, and I felt inspired to contribute to its development.”

Riya’s understanding that forensic science could enhance Fiji’s criminal justice system greatly influenced her decision to enter the field. She sought a career that would allow her to apply her knowledge and skills to real-world challenges. “This motivated me to pursue forensic science wholeheartedly, knowing I could help advance this field back home,” she added.

Currently, Riya is actively looking for employment opportunities in forensic science in Fiji. She has reached out to various organizations, including government agencies, in hopes of finding a suitable position but has yet to be successful.

Riya is most excited about the growth and discovery potential within forensic science. “The ability to solve mysteries, analyze evidence, and contribute to justice is something that truly excites me,” she said. “I also relish the challenge of continuously learning new techniques and technologies that can enhance investigations. Knowing I can make a concrete difference is incredibly rewarding.”

Her goal is to secure a job in forensic science and help develop this field in Fiji. “I want to be involved in strengthening forensic investigations, delivering justice to those in need, and making a real impact on our criminal justice system.”
