Josefa Volaisaya Mataitoga, a dedicated educator from Nukuni in Ono-i-Lau, is celebrating 15 years of impactful service in the teaching profession. At 38, Mr. Mataitoga reflects on his inspiring journey and the significant difference he has made in the lives of countless students throughout his career.
Born in Saqani, Cakaudrove, Mr. Mataitoga began his education journey at Vulivuli Primary School, continuing through Saqani Junior Secondary School, Labasa College, and Labasa Muslim College. Although he originally aspired to become a nurse, his path shifted towards teaching when he enrolled at Lautoka Teachers College. After completing his training, he returned to Ono-i-Lau, where he spent his initial five years as an assistant teacher at the local primary school—an experience that rekindled his connection to his roots.
Following his tenure in Ono-i-Lau, Mr. Mataitoga moved to Nasinu Sangam School for three years, where he pursued further education, earning postgraduate qualifications and ultimately a master’s degree in education. He is now in his third year at Onolevu District School, teaching Class 7 and 8 students, and has devoted the last decade of his career to becoming a head teacher.
Recently, Mr. Mataitoga received Scouts leadership training, an experience he found enriching and transformative. He emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and community involvement, encouraging younger generations to join Scouts as a means of developing essential leadership skills.
Mr. Mataitoga remains committed to education and community service. He aspires to advance his career by becoming an education officer, aiming to make an even greater contribution to the educational landscape in Fiji. His journey serves as a testament to the notion that unexpected changes can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers.
