From Despair to Degree: One Man’s Journey to Triumph

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi has overcome significant challenges, including depression, to achieve his academic goals. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific, he reflected on reaching a long-held dream. A decade earlier, he aspired to become a lawyer, but when that didn’t happen, he shifted his focus toward becoming a bank officer while also joining the USP alumni.

Mr. Tavatuilagi credits his success to developing a positive mindset and surrounding himself with supportive individuals. He emphasized the importance of having a strong family support system throughout his journey. “I was determined to break free from the confines of depression and to challenge myself to adopt a more positive outlook,” he explained.

At 33 years old and hailing from Nabouciwa in Nakelo, Tailevu, Mr. Tavatuilagi is committed to being the best version of himself when given the chance. He acknowledged that battling depression was one of the toughest challenges he faced while pursuing his degree.

“The encouragement from my peers, who had unwavering faith in me, helped me persist through various struggles and setbacks,” he stated. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, adding, “God was at the heart of it all, and I am thankful for the blessings of family and friendship.”
