From Depression to Graduation: One Man’s Inspiring Journey

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi has overcome significant challenges, including depression, to achieve his long-standing dream of earning a degree. On Friday, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific.

A decade prior, Mr. Tavatuilagi aspired to become a lawyer, but when that path did not unfold as he had hoped, he shifted his goals to pursue a career as a bank officer while also aiming to join the USP alumni community.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Tavatuilagi emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. He found that surrounding himself with supportive, quality individuals and having a strong family support network were vital to his success.

“I was determined to break free from the constraints of depression. I challenged myself to adopt a different perspective and embrace positivity,” he shared.

Originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo in Tailevu, Mr. Tavatuilagi, 33, remains committed to being the best version of himself when opportunities arise. He recognized that his battle with depression was one of the greatest obstacles he faced while working toward his degree.

“The encouragement from my peers who believed in me played a crucial role in my perseverance through struggles and setbacks,” he noted. “I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my family and friends, and I believe that God has guided me throughout this journey.”
